Anti-personnel landmines are often left behind in war zones long after the fighting is finished, resulting in deaths and horrific injuries to civilians even after peace has been declared.

An international campaign to stop them being used, built or stockpiled culminated in a 1997 treaty known as the Ottawa Convention.

All Nato members have signed the treaty, except for the United States, which argued that mines had a role in America’s military arsenal, especially in deterring a North Korean invasion of South Korea.
