Bairro do Carmo

A few decades ago, Bairro do Carmo was an isolated neighborhood of wooden shacks in São Paolo. It is now home to about 200 families who are themselves promoters of countless initiatives including the regularization of the residents’ land, courses in construction, home gardening, cutting and sewing, the distribution of milk powder for children and nursing mothers.

A “community bakery” has been established, as well as a school that has grown from 40 to 400 students, now classified as a ‘model school’ by the mayor.
