Casa Alba
Nigeria is the most populous country of Africa and 75% of its population is under 30 years old. The unemployment rate in Nigeria is high, rising to over 14%. Young people often struggle to acquire skills to help them earn a reasonable living. In the current world migration crisis, young people from Nigeria comprise a notable proportion of those risking everything, often even their lives, to head northwards across the desert and the hazardous Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to find their dream of a better future outside of Africa.
The name “Casa Alba” (“House of Dawn)” means a place where “new beginnings” are possible.
Casa Alba offers a 2-year training programme in (1) batik tie-and-dye techniques and (2) general sewing and basic tailoring skills, delivered in a safe and harmonious environment where the trainees are enabled to learn and to flourish, maximizing their abilities. The programme includes moral formation and life skills including teamwork, cooperation, personal responsibility and reliability. On leaving, when possible, the girls are presented with their own sewing machine to enable them to earn through their sewing.
