Neither Ravalomanana nor Rajoelina is standing in a bid to defuse tensions but allies of the two men are. Neither are political heavyweights.

Robinson Jean Louis, on Ravalomanana’s side, came out on top in the first round, ahead of rival, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, backed by Rajoelina.

Parliamentary polls were also taking place and this could mean a power-sharing deal is necessary.
